A 8.0-magnitude earthquake, which was focused in Sichuan Province, northwest of China on Monday at 2:28 pm, is estimated to have killed at least 34,000 people - and that toll has continued to rise dramatically as rescue teams reach the most affected areas.

The Chinese government estimates that at least 436,000 homes have been destroyed, and there reports that almost five million people are homeless.

In this moment of pain, we mourn the devastating loss of life and human suffering caused by the earthquake. And we express the deep condolences to our people and to all those affected by this enormous tragedy and profound sorrow for the families of all who lost their loved ones, including those who suffered the heartbreaking loss of having their children trapped in schools that collapsed.

Y&S contributed CNY500,000.00 (about USD72,463.00) to the "Hope Project" which is a public welfare undertaking, initiated and organized by the China Youth Development Foundation (CYDF) to help to rebuild a destroyed school in Sichuan Province.

CYDF enlists extensive support from domestic and abroad to assist dropout students and those at risk of dropping out to continue schooling in Chinese rural and poverty-stricken areas.
